Disastrous West Ham deal looming as Julen Lopetegui ‘connects’ with Brazilian former Premier League midfielder

New West Ham United manager Julen Lopetegui is said to be eyeing a highly questionable summer deal.

Julen Lopetegui was officially announced as West Ham’s new manager last week, and it appears he has his summer transfer plans in order.

After numerous high-level meetings with Tim Steidten, Lopetegui is looking forward to reinforcements in virtually every department of the field.

The Spaniard has been linked with a number of very exciting signings, including that of Wolves centre-back Max Kilman.

However, not all transfer links are as exciting as the Kilman rumors.

Lopetegui apparently has someone in mind who previously failed badly in the Premier League…

A disastrous deal with West Ham is on the horizon as Julen Lopetegui eyes the midfielder

The former Sevilla boss desperately needs to strengthen his squad this summer, especially in central midfield.

Tomas Soucek isn’t technically good enough to be a consistent starter in Lopetegui, while James Ward-Prowse is better suited to the more advanced role.

And now Lopetegui is looking to add a more technically gifted central midfielder to his ranks at the London Stadium.

It looks like former Liverpool flop Arthur Melo could be heading to West Ham.

This is evident from the weekend edition of Gazzetta dello Sport, which claims the Hammers have already contacted the Brazil international about a summer move to the London Stadium.

The 27-year-old spent last season on loan at Fiorentina but is still owned by Juventus, with the Turin side asking around £17million for him.

Arthur had a disastrous spell at Liverpool during the 2022/2023 season. He only performed for thirteen minutes under Jürgen Klopp and clearly failed to make any impression.

The Brazilian is technically gifted but simply isn’t built for the Premier League due to his lack of physicality and zero mobility.

If Julen Lopetegui brings Arthur to West Ham this summer, I think it could be a disastrous deal for the club.

He has absolutely no dynamism or athleticism – the two qualities Lopetegui most needs to add to his midfield this summer.

I would much rather we move for someone like Youssouf Fofana. That said, if Lopetegui believes Arthur Melo is the man we need, then I will trust the process.
