Guatemala hopes to export Hass avocados to the United States

Awaiting the results of the Pest Risk Analysis

The Guatemalan Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) reported that the country is in a crucial phase to be able to export Hass avocados to the United States, pending the outcome of the Pest Risk Analysis. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is now receiving feedback. This could significantly open the doors to international markets for Guatemalan producers.

Through the Plant Health Directorate of the Vice Ministry of Agricultural Health and Regulation (VISAR), MAGA plays a fundamental role in this process. It is responsible for registering and inspecting crops and granting phytosanitary certifications to producers who meet the required standards. This certification is essential to ensure that the Guatemalan Hass avocado meets international requirements for export.

The opportunity to export Hass avocados to the United States is significant for Guatemala’s agricultural sector. It brings new economic opportunities, strengthens local industries and benefits producers, giving them broader access to international markets.

Future predictions are positive. According to the Diario de Centro-AmericaGuatemalan producers expect to export at least 15,552.80 tons of Hass avocados to the United States by 2030, thanks to growing demand for the fruit in the North American country. This projection, supported by the Guatemalan Association of Exporters (Agexport), underlines MAGA’s commitment and continued efforts to meet all requirements for the export of Hass avocados, reaffirming its commitment to Guatemala’s agricultural development.
