ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 starts today

The ninth edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup kicks off today, June 1, and will be co-hosted by the West Indies and the USA. This prestigious T20 cricket event will see 20 teams compete in 55 matches to determine the 2024 champions.

The tournament begins with the U.S. facing Canada at Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas and ends with the final in Bridgetown, Barbados on June 29.

This is the first time that the US is hosting a major ICC tournament. West Indies have previously hosted two Men’s World Cups – the 50-plus edition in 2007 and the T20 World Cup in 2010.

Additionally, two Women’s T20 World Cups have taken place in the Caribbean.

Competitions will be held in nine locations: Dallas, Bridgetown, Providence, New York, Lauderhill, North Sound, Gros Islet, Kingstown and Tarouba.

While the majority of the tournament will take place in the Caribbean, 16 group stage matches will be played in the US, including the highly anticipated India vs.

Pakistan clash on Long Island, New York. The Super Eight stage, semi-finals and final will take place in the West Indies.

Twenty teams, the most in the tournament’s history, will compete. Hosts West Indies and the USA, along with the top eight teams from the 2022 edition (England, Pakistan, India, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Australia and the Netherlands), qualified automatically.

Afghanistan and Bangladesh qualified through the T20I rankings, while Ireland, Scotland, Canada, Nepal, Oman, Namibia, Uganda and Papua New Guinea secured their spots through regional qualifiers.

The teams are divided into four groups of five. Each team plays the others in their group once, with the top two from each group advancing to the Super Eight.

These teams will be reseeded for the Super Eight stage based on their initial seeding. Super Over rules apply to all tiered matches, with unlimited Super Overs where necessary.

In the event of rain, a minimum of five overs per team are required to determine a result in group and Super Eight matches.

Ten overs per team are required for the semi-finals and finals. Reserve days are planned for the first semi-final and the final. If a semi-final cannot be completed, the team that topped the Super Eight group will advance.

In a weather-affected final, the teams will be declared joint winners if necessary.

Previous winners of the Men’s T20 World Cup include India, Pakistan, England (twice), West Indies (twice), Sri Lanka and Australia, with England as the defending champions.
