West Indies announce 15-player squad against Sri Lanka for white-ball series

Port of Spain (Trinidad and Tobago), June 1 (ANI): West Indies on Friday announced their 15-player squad for the tour of Sri Lanka with crucial ICC Women’s Championship points at stake.
West Indies have announced the squad for their upcoming tour to Sri Lanka, which starts on June 15. The two teams will face each other in three ODIs and as many T20Is.
The team is once again led by captain Hayley Matthews, who is in exceptional form, supported by vice-captain Shemaine Campbelle.
April winner Hayley Matthews will continue to lead the side while Shemaine Campbelle will serve as her deputy, while pacer Shabika Gajnabi will return to the side after missing the tour of Pakistan.
The three-match ODI series is part of the ICC Women’s Championship, with the top five nations, including hosts India, qualifying directly for the Cricket World Cup in 2025. West Indies are now seventh in the rankings, with Sri Lanka in eighth place. . The two teams have similar points, but net run rate separates them.

Chief selector Ann Browne-John indicated that the series will have an impact on automatic qualification for the World Cup, with crucial points at stake.
“The ODI series serves as a crucial stepping stone towards automatic qualification for the Women’s Cricket World Cup, providing the team with a vital opportunity to gain more valuable points in the Women’s Championship. The tour will also enable the team to continue preparing during the T20I series for the upcoming T20 World Cup in Bangladesh in September,” said Ann Browne-John as quoted by ICC.
The chief selector also emphasized on getting used to the conditions as both the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh and the Cricket World Cup next year in India will see the West Indian team face similar conditions.
“The similar Indian subcontinental conditions will help the team refine their skill strategies, build synergy and assess their strengths and areas for improvement against quality opposition. The experience gained here will be invaluable as they progress towards the T20 World Cup, and ensure they are.” well prepared and in top form for the challenges ahead,” added Browne-John.
The West Indies team will leave for Sri Lanka on Sunday where they will participate in a seven-day camp in Colombo in preparation for this important tour.
