There are currently 1,623 LMIA jobs approved in Canada and approximately 11,029 jobs are still pending LMIA approval from the Employment and Social Development of Canada (ESDC).

However, finding LMIA jobs in Canada can be challenging and most of these vacancies may be posted solely to comply with ESDC guidelines.

But this shouldn’t stop them from trying; instead, they should keep trying and applying for these LMIA jobs, hoping that they will be lucky enough to find one.

What is an LMIA?

Canadian employers require a positive Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) before hiring a temporary foreign worker in a specific occupation.

In general, ESDC will issue a positive LMIA if an assessment shows that hiring a temporary foreign worker (TFW) will have a positive or neutral impact on the Canadian labor market.

This means that the employer has made sufficient efforts to hire a permanent resident or citizen for a vacant position, but has not been able to find a suitable match.

We regularly receive questions about where to find LMIA approved jobs so people can avoid falling into scams.

In this article, we outline a step-by-step guide to searching for LMIA-approved jobs in Canada in the official job bank.

Steps to Find LMIA Jobs in Canada

To avoid the time-consuming process of obtaining an LMIA, you can search for LMIA-approved job openings on Canada Job Bank.

You can also consult the list of employers who have registered and received a positive LMIA.

The procedures below will help you identify LMIA-approved positions on Canada Job Bank, as well as another option for finding LMIA-positive companies.

Step-by-step guide to LMIA job search:

Step 1: Go to the official Canada Job Bank website by clicking here and scrolling down to where you see “Temporary Foreign Worker.”

Step 2: Click on “Temporary Foreign Workers” and then click on the “Search” option to view the available vacancies.

Step 3: After clicking the search button to explore available positions, use the filter option at the bottom left corner of your mobile screen by location, salary, language and LMIA status.

Step 4: Scroll down to ‘Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) status’ in the filter options and check the box for ‘LMIA approved’.

After completing these processes, you will see a list of all available vacancies that are also LMIA approved.

You can then apply online and contact companies directly to express your interest or clarify any job questions.

Some tips to keep in mind when applying for LMIA jobs

Numerous users have reportedly claimed that applying to ‘name companies’ rather than ‘number companies’ will increase your chances of getting an LMIA job.

Paying an employer to obtain an LMIA is illegal, so avoid engaging in such practices.

Only apply to vacancies that actually match your career profile to have a better chance of being interviewed and hired.

Calibrate your resume against the roles and responsibilities of the position to show how you might be a good fit for a particular role.

How can I find LMIA positive employers?

As previously stated, companies must apply for an LMIA and receive a satisfactory response before hiring a foreign national. If they receive a negative answer, they cannot hire a foreigner.

To prevent employment fraud and enable interested candidates to obtain information without paying a fee, Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) publishes a list of companies that have applied for an LMIA and achieved a good result.

ESDC publishes a list of employers who have received a positive LMIA quarterly (every 3 months).

So whether you are a temporary foreign worker looking for a new company or someone looking to accept a job offer, you can use ESDC’s directory to identify potential companies.

Always remember that an employer must have a positive LMIA. With a negative LMIA, it is not permitted to employ temporary foreign workers.

How much is the LMIA validity?

LMIAs are only valid for 6 months, except in the construction and healthcare sectors, from May 1, 2024.
