Honoring those who served – CKNX News Today

June 2 is Canadian Armed Forces Day and this year marks several milestones, including the 80th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy and the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Every first Sunday in June, Canadians from coast to coast honor the contributions of Canadian soldiers.

In a statement, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau thanked the members of the Canadian Armed Forces who play a critical role in providing peace and stability here in Canada and abroad. “Members of the Canadian Armed Forces serve with immeasurable courage and sacrifice. That is a debt we can never repay. But we can do what is right by honoring the service and sacrifices of our active-serving members and veterans,” Trudeau said.

The Prime Minister also announced that there will be additional resources for the Veteran and Family Well-Being Fund in the 2024 Budget, including initiatives such as improving mental health care and helping homeless veterans find housing.

“Today, and every day, we celebrate the resilience and courage of members of the Canadian Armed Forces, past and present. They protect democracy, uphold the rules-based international order and defend peace – so we can live free. On behalf of the Government of Canada, I thank you, your families and loved ones for your service and sacrifice,” Trudeau added.
