Afghanistan a balanced side; tough challenge for us: Williamson | ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, 2024

The Blackcaps will finally play their first match of the 2024 T20 World Cup as they take on Afghanistan in Guyana on June 7 (Friday)

It’s been almost a week since the start of the 2024 T20 World Cup and we will finally see New Zealand in action in their first encounter against Afghanistan in Guyana. Kane Williamson’s men came quite close to lifting the trophy in 2021, reaching the semi-finals the following year.

However, Williamson is not looking that far ahead as New Zealand has a dangerous Afghan side ahead of them.

“They are a team that has gone from strength to strength every year and players who have been involved in any part of franchise cricket are certainly well aware of the capabilities of the world-class talent and skills they have within their side, Williamson said this during the pre-match press conference.

“They have always had very strong spin options but now they are a very balanced side with the creases they have and also the batting. A tough challenge and a team that plays well and grows a lot. So for us, we know there are strong teams in this competition and that often comes back to our cricket. We say that a lot, so it’s about the cricket we want to play and the focus on our plans and roles that we have within our side. .”

The Blackcaps have proven over the past ten years that they are a top team at all World Cups. They are also among the top favorites this edition. While there are fond memories of the T20 World Cup, Williamson insists his side is taking it one game at a time.

“We know it’s about 10 days before our first game, but once we get going, the games are coming pretty thick and fast,” Williamson said.

“So we’re trying to start well and build on and know that if we play well it will give us the best chance of going as far as possible in any tournament, so we’re looking forward to our first match tomorrow.” Afghanistan is a very strong team and then (we take) just one match at a time.”

Will this finally be New Zealand’s year? Williamson says his side will focus all their attention on getting their hands on the silverware.

“I suppose any player gets deeper into their career and some of those opportunities might naturally diminish, but the same is just our approach to it. What gives us the best opportunity? There are no promises,” the 33-year-old said. old saying.

“There are clearly good intentions, hopes and dreams, and so many teams have the same ones. And so it comes back to that cricket, what we’re trying to do as a group, and really put your attention and focus on that and see what unfolds.”

Following their draw against Afghanistan, New Zealand move their base to Trinidad where they will play their next three matches, starting with the West Indies (June 12), Uganda (June 14) and Papua New Guinea (June 17).
