Radio Havana Cuba | Courageous expressions of solidarity from the American people with Cuba

By Maria Josefina Arce

The various governments of the United States have carried out all kinds of actions and smear campaigns against Cuba, in addition to maintaining a cruel blockade, but from the American people countless and beautiful expressions of solidarity have reached us in recent decades.

This is the case of the emotional meeting that Cuban President Miguel Díaz Canel held in Havana in recent days with the American Youth Brigade ‘Let Cuba Live’ of the International People’s Assembly, which consists of more than two hundred movements. popular groups, political parties and trade unions fighting against imperialism, colonialism, racism and wars.

It was an open and frank dialogue, which started with the youthful shouts from under the blockade. For two hours they spoke on various topics, such as the economic difficulties the country is facing today due to a tightened blockade and its inclusion by the United States in the arbitrary list of countries that allegedly sponsor terrorism.

It has been yet another example of the American people’s continued and courageous expressions of support for the Cubans, which have been reflected in various actions to denounce to the world the damage caused to the families of the archipelago by Washington’s hostile policies has been inflicted.

And in its heroic history of resistance, Cuba has always had the support of much of American society. The more than thirty Caravans of Pastors for Peace who have traveled to Cuban territory with invaluable assistance since 1992, in violation of the framework of the economic blockade laws, testify to this.

Founded by the late Reverend Lucius Walker, members of these caravans travel across the United States to collect donations of medicine and other supplies, and to spread the word about the realities of the Caribbean nation.

Gail Walker, executive director of the Interfaith Foundation for Community Organization-Pastors for Peace, once said that the caravans are an illustration of real people-to-people politics.

Other projects are being added, such as Bridges of Love, an initiative by Cuban-American professor Carlos Lazo that defends rapprochement between the two countries and demands the lifting of the blockade.

There are also the numerous letters that representatives from various sectors have sent to US President Joe Biden, to fulfill his election campaign promise of a change in policy towards Cuba.

And the long-standing support of the US agricultural sector, which defends greater rapprochement with Cuba and the lifting of the economic blockade.

The determined and courageous support of a large part of American society has always been present throughout these decades, because, as President Díaz Canel said, solidarity cannot be blocked or silenced.
