The foreign minister says there is no consensus on members of the diaspora serving in government

Secretary of State Senator Kamina Johnson Smith says there is no consensus on the issue of members of the diaspora serving in government.

The issue was brought back into the spotlight following the revelation that opposition leader Mark Golding is a British citizen.

Although Jamaica’s constitution allows Commonwealth citizens to serve in government, many believe this raises questions of loyalty.

Other individuals have argued that if Commonwealth citizens can serve, the same should apply to Jamaicans in the diaspora.

Speaking at a post-Cabinet press conference this morning, Ms Johnson Smith noted that the issue is constitutional and discussions are continuing.
