LEIPZIG, Germany (AP) — Croatian veteran Luka Modric has scored against Italy, making him the oldest ever goalscorer at a European championship.

Modric, who is 38 years and 289 days old, claimed the opening goal after a rebound in the 55th minute, within a minute of a penalty being saved by Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The previous record was held by Ivica Vastic, who was 38 years and 257 days old when he scored for Austria against Poland at the 2008 European Championship.

Croatia realistically needs to beat Italy to stay in the tournament.
