Prime Minister Terrance Drew meets with Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te, aiming to improve relations

Basseterre, St Kitts and Nevis: Dr. Terrance Drew, the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, met with Taiwan President Lai Ching-te on Monday. They exchanged various dialogues and emphasized on elevating both countries towards growth and development through the deep-rooted connections between St. Kitts and Nevis and Taiwan.

Prime Minister Terrance Drew shared a glimpse of his visit, stating that this was the first military honors ceremony since President Lai’s inauguration in May. During the meeting, the leader of the nation threw light on various topics to take their friendship and both nations to greater heights. He noted that this long-standing friendship, which has existed for more than forty years, is built on the principles of democracy, mutual respect and shared values.

“I was officially welcomed to Taiwan this morning, together with our delegation, with a grand military honors ceremony at the Presidential Office in Taipei,” noted Dr. Drew up.

Prime Minister Terrance Drew addressed all the esteemed guest members and expressed his gratitude for his extended welcome. He stated that he is eternally grateful to the government and citizens of Taiwan for their assistance in achieving their goals. He emphasized the commitment of both countries in exploring new opportunities for cooperation, especially in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, public infrastructure, ICT and environmental conservation.

He further highlighted Taiwan’s contributions, stating that they have greatly assisted St. Kitts and Nevis through technical and financial assistance, capacity building and international advocacy.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Drew discussed his future plans for St. Kitts and Nevis with President Lai and shed light on the signed agreement for the new climate-smart JNF General Hospital that will become the country’s flagship hospital. He noted that the hospital will play a crucial role in establishing a comprehensive “health city” on the island.

The nation’s leader wanted to bring sustainability to the island’s health sector and improve the quality of life for the residents of St. Kitts and Nevis. President Ching-te also outlined the crucial partnership between the two countries and framed it as a pledge to continue efforts to bring prosperity to both countries.
