Manchester United ‘close to £27m Erik ten Hag deal’ when Manuel Ugarte’s bid was submitted

Manchester United are reportedly close to agreeing a new contract with manager Erik ten Hag as they also pursue a deal for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte.

Longstanding questions about the Dutchman’s future at Old Trafford were finally answered earlier this month when he was kept in place by co-owners Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos following a weeks-long post-season performance review.

Many had expected Ten Hag to be sacked after a disastrous season that saw United slump to their worst ever Premier League finish – eighth – and lose the most number of top-flight games in a single season (14) since the start of the season. 1989/90.

However, the Red Devils ultimately decided to stick with the former Ajax boss after he secured the club’s 13th FA Cup victory with a shock win over rivals Manchester City at Wembley.

Such a decision would be expected to come with a new contract as a vote of confidence in Ten Hag, after links to several other potential management candidates such as Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Tuchel, Gareth Southgate, Thomas Frank, Roberto De Zerbi, Kieran McKenna and more.

According to the Daily Mirror, the 54-year-old is now close to a two-year extension to his current contract with United until 2027, worth a whopping £27 million. The club is also undergoing a renewal of its technical staff. icon and compatriot Ruud van Nistelrooy has apparently turned down the chance to succeed Bayern Munich’s Vincent Kompany as Burnley boss to return to Old Trafford as coach.

With an agreement with Ten Hag on the way, United also appear to be pushing ahead with their summer transfer plans.

Widespread reports claim that the FA Cup holders have made an opening bid for PSG midfielder Ugarte, who is currently away with Uruguay at the Copa America tournament in the United States.

French outlet L’Equipe reports that PSG have rejected United’s initial bid for Ugarte, who was a target for Chelsea last summer during his time at Sporting Lisbon, before they cooled their interest to instead sign Moises Caicedo from Brighton for £115 million to complete.

It is said that the reigning French champions want to recoup as much as possible of the €60 million they spent to sign the 23-year-old, who made 37 appearances in all competitions in his first season in Paris.
