2 for 1 tickets for selected Central and South American cities and 20% back for selected European cities

Avianca is having a double award sale, offering discounts of up to 50% when redeeming LifeMiles to select South American destinations and 20% back on award flights to select European cities.

The agreement

• Avianca LifeMiles offers two award sales:

  • The ticket redemption period under the promotion runs from June 25, 2024 (00:01 GMT-6) to July 4, 2024 (23:59 GMT -6).
  • For outward and/or return journeys between London, Madrid, Barcelona and Paris, on routes operated by avianca, the following flight dates apply: The journey can take place between September 16, 2024 and November 10, 2024.
  • Last day to complete the trip: November 10, 2024.
  • Seats are limited and may not be available on all flights and/or dates.
  • Applies only to tickets on routes operated by Aerovías del Continente Americano SA Avianca, Taca International Airlines SA, Avianca Costa Rica SA and/or Avianca-Ecuador SA

Quick thoughts

The highlight here is of course the 2 for 1 tickets to select Central and South American cities. This is a discount rather than an immediate discount at the time of booking. As the terms state, if you book two people on the same reservation, you will get LifeMiles back for one of them. If you book for three people, you will only get the cost of one person back, but if you book for four people, you will get a discount for two of their tickets. With award flights starting at €5,550 one-way, this means your net cost could be as little as 2,775 LifeMiles per person + taxes and fees.

While the 20% discount on award flights to select European cities sounds attractive, it’s actually a little less exciting than that. For starters, it’s only valid on flights operated by Avianca, meaning you’re limited to flying to/from Los Angeles or Miami. The pricing isn’t particularly notable either. For example, the cheapest price to one of the European destinations is 44,000 LifeMiles one way, so net 35,200 miles after the discount. Assuming you can also find savings prizes; when checking the Los Angeles to London route, there were only a few days left available at that 44,000 mile price at the end of the promotional period, while everything else was almost triple that rate.

It is not clear whether these discounts will be combined with Club LifeMiles discounts for subscribers. The terms and conditions for this award sale state: “Not valid with any other lifemiles redemption offers or Avianca discount offers.” That makes it sound like it doesn’t stack, but in practice that may not be the case.

Don’t forget, American Express is offering a 15% bonus when you transfer Membership Rewards to LifeMiles through the end of June.
