“Just because it’s India…” – Salman Butt denies allegations that ICC Rohit Sharma & Co. favors in T20 World Cup 2024

Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt has dismissed the ICC’s allegations in favor of India during the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The Pakistan Cricket Association has been busy criticizing the ICC for giving India an unnecessary advantage.

One of the main reasons behind the allegations is that India’s venue for the semi-final had already been decided. India would play the semi-final in Guyana regardless of the result in the Super 8s. Several former cricketers questioned the ICC’s decision. Recently, former England captain Michael Vaughan called it unfair.

The Pakistani cricket fraternity has also been busy alleging that India has an unfair advantage in the T20 World Cup, with their former captain Inzamam-ul-Haq even going as far as accusing India of ball-tampering in the competition.

Salman Butt defends India:

While Pakistan’s cricketing fraternity is busy taking shots at India, Salman Butt has come to their defence. The former Pakistani batsman began by admitting that there is indeed a lot of talk about the ICC’s preference for India, before pointing out that Pakistan would have been in a similar position had they managed to score 42 runs from as many balls against India.

Pakistan bowed out of the tournament in the group stage after losing to the US and India. Against India, they could not make 120 runs even though they were 72 for 2 after 12 overs. Butt also praised India for their performance in the ongoing tournament and also praised their cricket structure.

“There’s a lot of talk that the ICC favoured them by scheduling their match in Guyana and all that. But honestly, if we had scored 42 runs in 42 balls with eight wickets in hand, all those matches would have been the same. Let’s not feel like we have to say something just because it’s India,” Salman Butt said.

“If we talk professionally and on merit, they have played better cricket. Their cricketing journeys are very clear, they have clarity in their roles. Whether it is their leadership, coaching or the system of building bench strength, they all relevant things are correct,” he added.

Meanwhile, India will take on South Africa in the final on Saturday (June 29). The match is scheduled to be played in Barbados. India are aiming for their second T20 World Cup title and first since 2007. On the other hand, South Africa will be playing in a World Cup final for the first time.
