RCMP are reminding motorists to plan ahead and enjoy the Canada Day weekend responsibly

Mounties in Alberta are reminding everyone to enjoy the long weekend responsibly.

A total of 117 DUI drivers were taken off the road by the Alberta RCMP over the 2023 Canada Day long weekend, according to a news release.

Police data also shows that over the long weekend in July last year, 76 people were injured in traffic crashes in Alberta RCMP jurisdictions and four people were killed.

The police emphasize that driving under the influence is dangerous and punishable.

Sergeant Darrin Turnbull with Alberta RCMP Traffic says a long summer weekend offers the opportunity to spend time with off-road vehicles while camping or boating on the lake. He adds that you should never drive a motorized vehicle if you have drunk or used cannabis. If you suspect someone is impaired while driving, Turnbull encourages the public to call 911.

Alberta RCMP are reminding everyone to plan ahead and drive home safely, call a taxi or share a ride, use a designated driver or stay overnight.
