Sunderland Care Homes embark on Mexican celebration to kick off ‘Cruise Around the World’ series – Sunderland Magazine

Mexico was the first port of call on the nursing homes’ ‘Cruise Around the World’ armchair adventures

Residents from three Sunderland Care Homes: Maple Lodge in Witherwack and Regents View and The Laurels in Hetton-le-Hole, were joined by their family and friends for Mexican-themed parties to celebrate the Cinco de Mayo festival.

Mexico was the first stop on the care homes’ ‘Cruise Around the World’ travel chair, where residents of Four Seasons care homes in the UK will experience the sights, sounds, tastes and culture of the destinations they serve all year round go to. I’ve always wanted to visit. The ship will also dock at cherished destinations, allowing residents to share stories of their past travels and take a trip down memory lane.

The celebrations had all the ingredients to transport guests to Central Mexico, with vibrant decorations, lively music and plenty of maraca shaking. After playing board games including Pin the Tail on the Donkey, Cactus Hoopla and whacking the pinatas, the nursing home chefs prepared margaritas and mocktails and a feast of burritos, enchiladas and chocolate churros.

“What a great event with fantastic outfits, so much color and fun.”

Resident, Doreen Park, who lives at The Laurels Care Home

“Preparations for our Cinco de Mayo celebration started weeks ago and everyone was involved. Our residents made colorful decorations and props during their craft activities, so we were ready for a Mexican-style party!

“It was a very exciting first port of call on our world cruise, everyone enjoyed experiencing the culture of Mexico and loved the food. We are now deciding what our next destination will be, having already booked Paris for the Olympic Games in July and Lapland for the holidays in our cruise diary.”
