Egypt warns Israel and the US about Rafah, saying the peace treaty is in danger

Amid the ongoing Israeli military operation in Rafah, a senior Egyptian official has expressed concerns and warned Israel, the United States and European governments of the potential risk posed by the long-standing peace treaty between Egypt and Israel.

Speaking anonymously to The Associated Press, the official stressed that Cairo sees the current situation as a threat to regional stability and the cornerstone peace deal.

The warning comes as tensions escalate in the southern Gaza Strip, where Israeli forces continue their offensive against Hamas.

Yesterday, the Israeli army issued evacuation calls to Palestinians in other neighborhoods of Rafah, as part of the ongoing operation against the Hamas terror group.

Reports suggest that Egypt had previously warned against any Israeli incursion into Rafah or the relocation of its residents, saying such actions could jeopardize the decades-long peace treaty between Egypt and Israel.

The Wall Street Journal had previously reported on these concerns, highlighting the possibility of suspension of the peace deal if certain red lines were crossed.

To limit the risk of a refugee crisis, Egypt has strengthened its border security measures, deployed tanks and strengthened the border wall with Gaza. The aim is to prevent a significant influx of refugees into the Sinai Peninsula, amid the escalating conflict between Israel and Hamas.
