Escalona still lives in the souls of those who love lagenato, today they hold commemorative events

With the floral offering made year after year at the Jardines del Eccehomo cemetery in Valledupar, the Rafael Escalona Martínez Foundation will begin the commemorative events of the fifteenth anniversary of the departure of the most famous composer on May 13 at 8:30 am. famous of lagenato music.

The teacher’s grave is located in the shade and cool of a mango tree where birds flutter and sing, adorning the landscape and lulling visitors to sleep with their trills.

In the afternoon, with the support of the Mayor’s Office of Valledupar and the Cesar government, the Vallenatos will be able to enjoy a special and important event: the National Choir of Colombia will give a concert in Plaza Alfonso López, showcasing some of the creations that Rafael Escalona left behind for history.

This is how Old Sara, The Testament and The House in the Air, among others, will be heard in the voices of the country’s best lyric singers who have combined their talent to sing for the great lagenato minstrel.

The event is this holiday Monday at Plaza Alfonso López at 6:00 in the afternoon, where the Vallenato singing of the first choral group in Colombia will be performed for the first time.

On Tuesday, May 14 at 8:30 a.m. in the Consuelo Araújo Noguera auditorium of the Departmental Library, a conversation will take place between experts in Vallenato folklore and members of the National Choir. It will be an interesting dialogue in which they will also participate. music students, folklore enthusiasts and the general public.

The last activity of the National Choir during its visit to Valledupar is on Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the afternoon, when a knowledge meeting will take place between the choristers and the students of the Andrés, el Turco Gil Vallenata Music Academy.

Escalona lives on thanks to its legacy that is strengthened over time with its songs that never stop playing and the tributes to the maestro throughout the national territory.

The musical work of ‘El maestro de Patillal’, symbol of lagenato music, has been very important in strengthening folklore and was demonstrated in his more than 100 songs that transcended borders and became part of the repertoire of the greatest and most recognized music singers.

When you refer to Escalona, ​​you associate yourself with this genre as a whole. His songs cover the essence of lagenato, whose lyrics touched everyday life, the melodies, accelerated the heartbeat of those who remember him until now as the greatest exponent of this music.

“El Chevrolito”, “La Despedida”, “Old Sara”, “The Testament”, “La Casa en el Aire”, “La Custodia de Badillo” and many more are part of his repertoire that has also been performed by artists from Colombia and around the world.

His inspiration has always been the stories of the men and women of his city and the Colombian Caribbean. There he concentrated and managed to penetrate every heart with the resonance of his interpretations. The ‘flutes’ and the roar of the accordion became almost submissive pieces to the majestic creativity of the artist. Since February 18, 2004, when the nonprofit was founded by his daughter, Taryn Escalona Gil, its mission has been to introduce new generations to the hard work of this great composer.

After the departure of this great minstrel, the Foundation started to develop activities to strengthen the great cultural heritage. “We want to emphasize the willingness that Vallenato artists have always had when it comes to paying tribute to Escalona. Today the great musical tribute will leave its mark, next to the emblematic Alfonso López Plaza as a backdrop,” said Taryn Escalona, ​​President of the Foundation.
