2024 – Forest fires | SOPFEU sends reinforcements to Western Canada

(Montreal) While rain in recent days has provided relief to those battling wildfires in Western Canada, they will soon receive reinforcements from Quebec.

The Society for the Protection of Forests Against Fire (SOPFEU) announced Sunday that approximately 20 forest firefighters and a SOPFEU representative will be deployed to Manitoba. A SOPFEU information officer will also be deployed to Alberta.

These people left Quebec on Saturday en route to Western Canada.

The Quebec government has signed the Canadian Mutual Aid Agreement in case of forest fires.

“The situation in Quebec and SOPFEU’s operational capabilities allow the country to lend resources to its counterparts in other provinces without harming its ability to intervene in Quebec territory,” SOPFEU’s press release said.

Since the start of the season, according to the most recent statistics, SOPFEU teams have already fought 96 fires, which have destroyed 105.5 hectares of forest.

SOPFEU invites the population to be extra careful during this spring period, when conditions are often conducive to the outbreak of fires.
