Canada sacks head coach Pubudu Dassanayeke ahead of 2024 ICC T20 World Cup

St Kitts: Just days before Canada opens their T20 Men’s World Cup campaign against the USA at Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas, Texas on June 1, the team has fired its head coach Pubudu Dassanayeke, who had been in the role for two years.

A report in Cricbuzz says Dassanayeke was verbally informed on Wednesday morning by newly elected Cricket Canada vice-president Gurdeep Klair that he would no longer be needed with the team after Canada’s preliminary matches that ended in St. Kitts on Thursday.

“A letter expressing dissatisfaction with Dassanayeke had been circulated among the players, and although a number of members of the squad refused to put their names on it, Cricket Canada apparently deemed there was sufficient cause for dismissal.

“Although a board meeting is expected this evening where the question will likely be asked, there is little expectation of a turnaround. No replacement for Dassanayake has yet been appointed,” the report said.

Dassanayeke was in his second stint as Canada’s head coach since July 2022 and had previously coached the United States and Nepal twice. He also successfully coached Canada at the ICC Americas T20 regional final where they defeated Bermuda to qualify for a T20 Men’s World Cup for the first time. IANS
