Journalists report: preview of the Mexican elections of June 2

One hundred million Mexicans are registered to vote in what will be a historic election on June 2. In addition to local positions, all seats in the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies are up for election, as are eight governorships and the presidency. One of the top two presidential candidates – Claudia Sheinbaum, former head of government of Mexico City, or Xóchitl Gálvez, a former senator – will make history by becoming Mexico’s first female president. The elections follow a presidential campaign in which violence, security and corruption top the agenda and with both top candidates expressing a desire to work with the next US president on tackling migration.

What could be the possible election results on June 2? How will the outcomes reshape the political landscape, influence Mexico’s future policies, and impact Mexico’s relationship with the United States? How do journalists covering the Mexican elections deal with the complexity of political reporting?
